PFAS are “forever chemicals” present in many day-to-day items we touch, foods we eat, and the water we drink. PFAS can negatively affect the health and immunity of infants, children, and adults to diseases. Infants have one of the highest immediate exposures because of their close proximity to dust, constantly touching items and putting their fingers or items in their mouths, and even the transmission of PFAS in their mothers’ breast milk. Permitted levels of PFAS in drinking water approved by state and federal governments are higher than permitted levels in European Countries. European countries have also banned many food wrappings that have PFAS in them to reduce their citizens exposure. Overall, decreasing PFAS exposure is difficult, but not impossible.
